FORTIFIEDx featured in Open Access Government: Bringing infectious disease diagnostics closer to patients

FORTIFIEDx was recently featured in Open Access Government in an article exploring how European projects are bringing infectious disease diagnostics closer to patients. The article highlights FORTIFIEDx alongside the DECIPHER project, both aiming to develop integrated point-of-care diagnostics that reduce reliance on central laboratories and complex equipment.

The article presents FORTIFIEDx’s approach to a disposable, self-powered microfluidic diagnostic patch combining sample collection, fluid handling and analysis in a single device. The patch brings together the (i)SIMPLE microfluidic technology used and further advanced within FORTIFIEDx with hollow microneedles for minimally invasive sampling, targeting HIV, syphilis, Ebola and Lassa.

It also highlights the project’s focus on making these technologies suitable for real-world use. Alongside analytical and clinical validation, FORTIFIEDx is developing high-throughput manufacturing approaches to enable affordable production at scale.
